Is there anyone who might be able to help me learn some Spanish before I go, in exchange for something I could do for you? Thanks very much for any help!

Hello,

Does anyone have any tips on getting the? (I love the way SAmericans speak) When I was younger I could roll my "rrrrrrrr" and spoke in a melodic form, especially when I was mimmic my babysitter. 15 years later and I don't like the way I ennuciate or sound. No offense, but I sound like a Gringa who is learning Spanish.

On the other hand my friend only know a few words, but he gets compliments all the time from native Mexican speakers . They believe he is fluent and start chatting w/ him right away. Then.. he'll get the "deer in the headlights" look when he can't get past.. "un burrito por favor... no cebollas, no cilantro.. or " yo quiero un burrito... " or "como estas".
He has a great deal of confidence and he's comfortable because he studied acting for many years and practiced with various accents (cockney, irish etc...)

When I speak.. It doesn't sound as nice. Native speakers will stop and study me intently.. Sometimes correct my ennunciation. Sometime I get a compliment now and then. I know confidence in speaking the language is a big factor.

Anyone out there have any tip? ONe girl told me she learn to relax her tongue and mouth after having a glass of wine. Though her husband is from Peru so I'm sure his accent has rubbed off on her.

Hola gente. I apologize for what's going to be a long posting. I have a grammar question:

I could use some help/clarification on the uses of future imperfect and conditional. Conditional in spanish is pretty much the same as conditional in English – you generally use it when you would use “would”. It can also be used to make polite requests. However, from what I understand the future imperfect can also be used to indicate uncertainty/hypothetical situations. I find it confusing, since I’m not clear why you would choose one over the other. In an exercise book that I have, here are examples that are given before an exercise used to practice distinguishing between the use of future imperfect, future perfect and conditional for a hypothetical situation:

El futuro imperfecto, el futuro perfecto y el condicional se utilizan para formula hipótesis en el presente y en el pasaso:

a.	¿Has visto a la niña?
b.	No, pero estará en su cuarto

a.	¿Que hora es?

b.	Estaría en clase de cerámica.

I get the future perfect – it’s the same as future perfect in English, basically translating as “by now he already will have arrived”. But I don’t get the difference between the 1st and 3rd examples. Why couldn’t you use estaría in the first case or estará in the last example? Does it have to do with the fact that the third example is referring to the past tense? Or is that not important at all?

Can you say something like “generally the conditional is used if you want to say “would” and the future imperfect is used in situations where you would use “should”? Any help??

I want to expose myself to a lot of Spanish in hopes that will help me re-learn.

Pardon me for writing in English, but as i mentioned my Spanish is well below par at the moment, and I wanted to ensure I got my points across clearly.

TIA!

My Spanish teacher has said on several occasions that the best way to learn Spanish is to get hooked on Spanish soap operas. Apparently, the soaps method worked very well for her when she moved to Seattle from Costa Rica. She said her English improved the most when she watched All My Children every day.

We, her students, should watch soap operas in Spanish (or any other desired language) because they:
1) are overacted, so you don't have to catch every word
2) have simple dialog and often easy stories
3) are predictable yet addictive

I don't have cable, but a friend of mine is willing to tape stuff from Univision.

I've been in contact with a guy from Argentina, but I'm unsure if I should be learning that dialect(?) I'm spending a month in Spain in Sept., so I would prefer someone from Spain, but what I've found is the two teachers I've spoken w/from Spain are charging $30 an hour. Does that sound about right?

I would like to continue practicing my Spanish since I plan on buying property in Mexico and perhaps living there maybe half the year, eventually. However, I live in Seattle and not many gringos here speak Spanish. I still consider myself a beginner, although I can oftentimes have a very slow and tedious 30-minute convesration in Spanish (it gets the job done). My goal is to become fluent. I am looking for a social group here in Seattle that regularly gets together to speak Spanish (to learn Spanish), or perhaps an individual from Mexico who would like to make some extra cash by hanging out with a gringo and teaching him Spanish while walking about Seattle. Taking classes drives me nuts, and it's not cheap. I am used to learning Spanish by hanging out with people who speak it. If you have any info., please post. Thanks!
