There has not been much action on this tribe so I thought I would post WOTD (Word of the day). Please add comments, addtional phrases, or what ever is on your mind. I will try to post a different word everyday. Lets have fun with this and build our vocab. I am getting these words from an email I get from the following site: www.transparent.com/language...anish.htm
Spanish: ayer
English: yesterday
-----------------------------------------------------------
Example Phrase Using Today's Word:
Spanish: Está enferma desde ayer.
English: She has been sick since yesterday.

Re: WOTD: ayer - yesterday
Wed, October 4, 2006 - 9:18 AMThanks Sarah. I really need to build my vocab and want to meet other people that want to do the same. My Spanish skills are weak and I need to start improving them. So I hope this tribe can get active and we can start learning and sharing Spanish with each other. -

Re: WOTD: ayer - yesterday
Wed, October 4, 2006 - 9:32 AMYou know, I was contemplating the fact that I didn't know some words yesterday. I have a friend who is learning Spanish at the present time and so she occasionally will ask me words which I may or may not know. Frustrates me when I don’t know a word, but at this time in my life, after taking Spanish since I was 7 years old, I find it harder and harder to get a handle on new words and new grammar (or changes to my poor Spanish grammar). Perhaps this will help, at least in terms of the vocabulary. -

Re: WOTD: ayer - yesterday
Wed, October 4, 2006 - 12:04 PMWhen I read, I try to figure out meaning from context and keep going...but if the word pops up a SECOND time, then I'll look it up and write it down.Writing it out and reading it aloud helps.
There is a book I've found REALLY wonderfully helpful too--"Breaking Out of Beginners Spanish." You gotta love a book that titles the chapter on the subjunctive "the Twilight Zone" and bases most of its examples on wishing the mariachi band would leave :-) -

Re: WOTD: ayer - yesterday
Tue, October 17, 2006 - 9:19 AMI also have Breaking Out Of Beginner's Spanish. I agree that it's very helpful. Lots of idioms & cultural references, too.
And Ben, thanks for taking the initiative with the WOTD. Great idea that doesn't necessarily require *you* to do all the work. Anyone can contribute. :) -
